Dear friends and blog readers,
I have been sent a lovely poem by a blog follower which I would like to share with you, as it so nicely captures the theme the blog is currently exploring- interpersonal relationships:
'No Man is an Island'
No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
John Donne 1621
You do not have to be religious to believe in the interconnectedness of people suggested by this beautiful poem. As previously mentioned, our relationships are complex and it can be very hard to live with others. However, research has shown that it is even more difficult to live without other people, as we humans are so deeply social creatures. I am currently reading a fascinating book called The Ten Types of Human by the Human Rights lawyer Dexter Dias, which is illustrating the spectrum of human behaviour - and its effect on others - extremely well. The book has been suggested to me by a lovely colleague and it is likely to feature at some point in the blog!
You will hear back from me on Friday with the first part of two posts about dealing with difficult people. I hope that you all have a good week until then,
Petra
